Set along the Appalachian Trail, Icewater Spring Shelter is a retreat for those who seek silence over spectacle — ancient hardwoods, cool spring water, and the kind of stillness that only deep in the Smokies can provide.

1880s
Icewater Spring Shelter began as a rest stop along one of America's oldest footpaths — a place where weary travelers could pause, draw cool water from the spring, and find warmth by the fire. Today, it remains exactly that: a refuge from noise, a pause in the rush, a return to something honest.
Our rooms are few, each one designed to honor the landscape rather than compete with it. Stone fireplaces, hand-selected timber, and windows that frame the Smokies the way they always have — these are not details chosen for effect. They are the only choices that made sense.

Intimate, private rooms
Four rooms. Four distinct perspectives on the same ancient range. Each one designed for silence, comfort, and the kind of rest that doesn't require an explanation.
Named for the natural spring that feeds the property, this room offers a stone fireplace, hand-forged iron bedframe, and windows that catch the morning light the way it has for two centuries.
Perched on the eastern ridge, this room captures the full sweep of the valley below. Original heart pine floors, a clawfoot tub, and the sound of wind through hemlock — all part of the quiet economy here.
Our largest room, with vaulted timber ceilings and direct trail access through a private hemlock grove. Ideal for those who want to step from their door onto the Appalachian Trail itself.
Exposed fieldstone walls and a working hearth define this room — the oldest part of the shelter, restored with care. It holds the day's warmth long after sunset and offers a solitude that feels earned.

Step from your room onto the Appalachian Trail — no shuttle, no long drive. Our front door opens directly to one of the most traveled footpaths in the world.
Black bear, wild turkey, and elk roam the surrounding woods. At night, the sky opens in a way you won't find anywhere else — no light pollution, no compromise.
No televisions. No noise. Just the rhythm of the mountain — coffee on the porch at dawn, firelight in the evening, and the kind of quiet that rewires you.
Swain County sits in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains — a region where the air is cleaner, the roads are fewer, and the silence is something you feel in your chest. We're located directly on the Appalachian Trail, accessible by car but feeling worlds away.
